Mid-century Ranch

A long, low 1961 ranch given back its walnut, its stone and its sense of humor.

Dining room with stained timber beams, a long oak table on trestle legs and black moulded chairs

Two owners had painted over almost everything the architect got right. We took the ceiling back to timber, put a stone wall where a stone wall clearly used to be, and let walnut do the talking in every room that faces south.

Scope
Full renovation, five rooms
Timeline
Fourteen months, phased around the family
Style
Mid-century, stone, walnut, olive
Trades
Stonemason, cabinetmaker, electrician

Room by room

Living room

The stone wall is the whole argument. Everything else steps back: a deep leather sofa, an olive stool that moves wherever it is needed, two small tables instead of one big one.

Kitchen

Fluted walnut runs floor to ceiling and hides the pantry door completely. The worktop is a single slab, and the hob sits in the run rather than on an island, because this family cooks facing each other.

Pantry hall

The corridor between the kitchen and the garage does real work now. A prep sink, a second worktop, open shelves on blacksmith brackets, and a slatted screen so none of it is visible from the dining table.

Dining room

The beams were always there under three coats of white. We stained them, hung two small fixtures instead of one chandelier, and built the table long enough for the ten people who actually turn up.
