Fenwick Interiors

The studio

Small on purpose, and staying that way.

Fenwick Interiors has been designing houses in and around Clearwater Bluff since 2012. Eight projects a year, run by the same two people who show up to the first meeting.

Studio lounge with a fluted timber wall, sage armchairs, a long oak table and tall plants

Marguerite Fenwick trained as a furniture maker before she trained as a designer, which is why the studio starts with how a room is used and works backwards to how it looks. If a sofa is in the wrong place, no amount of paint fixes it.

We take on eight houses a year. That number is not modesty, it is arithmetic: any more and somebody else would be running your project while we answered emails. Every scheme is drawn here, every order is placed here, and one of us is on site on delivery day.

Most of our work comes from within forty minutes of the studio, and most of it comes from someone who saw a friend’s house. That suits us. It means we can be there the same week when a joiner has a question.

“A room is finished when you stop noticing the decisions. Until then it is still a project.”

Marguerite Fenwick, lead designer

What we believe

Three rules we do not bend.

01

The room before the mood board

We measure, photograph and sit in every room at three different times of day before a single image gets pinned. Light is the material you cannot buy, so it goes first.

02

Buy fewer things, better

Most rooms are not short of furniture. Half of a typical budget goes on two or three pieces that will outlive the scheme, and the rest is spent making what you own look deliberate.

03

You have to live in it

Nothing goes in a plan that cannot survive a wet dog, a toddler or a Tuesday. If a finish only works when the house is empty, it is a photograph, not a design.

A short history

How we got here.

  1. 2012

Started at a kitchen table with one client, one room and a borrowed van.

  2. 2016

Moved into the Main Street studio and took on a full-time project manager.

  3. 2021

Settled on a maximum of eight houses a year so nothing gets rushed.

The studio is open Tuesday to Friday. Bring your floor plan, or just the photo on your phone that started all of this.
